Why would my guy friend send me @3am a text saying “I just want to be loved rn” when he’s trying to get in a relationship with a girl?

I would just like some feedback to why my guy friend would say randomly to me at three in the morning that he wants to be loved right not and then proceed to talk to me about the girl he’s trying to get involved with BUT continuously boosting me up and blatantly flirting with me. He said something that tipped me off that he did have feelings for me at one point when he mentioned what he wants to do for her which is something he already did for me. And yes, I do like my friend but I also want him to be happy and it’s just a little complicated and confusing for me and what I should do or how to handle this situation.
