First off, how old is the girl? If she is under 18, possessing nude pictures of her is a sexual offence (as that is child porn). In fact, when she takes the pictures and sends them, she is creating, possessing and distributing child pornography. Something that most under 18's don't seem to know about, despite the fact they are told this SEVERAL TIMES.
Also, you should never ASK for nudes. It's a big problem nowadays, especially among teenagers, that they always want naked pictures of a girl. From my own experience, all they want them for is to show their mates how big their girls rack is or it's something to crack one off to. Its pathetic.
If the girl wants to send you some, she will, you don't have to ASK for them.
I am 32, I have had many girlfriends, and I don't ask them for naked pictures. If we have been together for a while, and I've already seen her naked, I may ask if I can take a picture of her myself. Most agree in this situation, but the only person who sees those pictures is ME, I don't show them around.
This whole "asking for nudes" thing is just total impatience on the part of the asker, and it really just tells the girl that you only care about her body (and sex) and that you are probably not interested in a proper romantic relationship.

If you were in the working world, and you did this at work, you could be easily be sued for harassment.

You should understand that what is "not a big deal to you", can be a big deal to someone else. Our society is polarized, so it is actually on every corner that some group have their standards and the other group have much differing ones. Next time you consider doing something like this remember this episode and ask yourself whether what you have in mind will be perceived as appropriate BY THE PERSON you are interacting with. And in this case obviously it was an insult to her and an unexpected reaction from your side. After that not talking to you is very natural. If you really want to apologize, do something nice. I don't know, buy flowers or write a letter - no idea. Try to apologize respectfully and regretfully using some words of higher language.

You dont just jump in and ask that, you have to build rapport with them and become a close friend before even considering anything like that as it generally doesn't end well even if you do get what you want.
My go to used to when I was in that sort of game was using truth or dare, asking genuine questions to get to know them then slowly dialling it up once you are getting on well with them.
Get close with them and gauge whether you like them intimately before risking that approach, as I found out later on if you get to a comfortable point where you feel confident going through with that chances are they'll feel mutual, that's how my girlfriend and I first got close.
If they're so hot that there's no substitute you'll put the work in to get them to warm to you and feel comfortable with sharing that type of content.
