What does it mean when your friends with benefits says that he cares about you?

Have been in a friends with benefits relationship for almost 2 years with one of my ex boyfriends & he told me that he cares about me but we both won’t use the LOVE word. Just trying to read in between the lines & need some opinions because I think he loves me sometimes & sometimes I don’t

I’m not sure if I understand your question right, I believe he does care for me since 1 we are ex’s. When we dated I lost my virginity to him but that was 10 years ago & it’s going to sound really bad bc it is but we are both in relationships & just can’t be together right now even if we wanted to. We have actually stopped our friends with benefits relationship a few times but he came back the first time and then I came back the second time and the third time it was a mutual thing. We talk everyday & we talk about other things, it’s not just sex but sometimes I think
Oh he’s just telling me what I wanna hear & he’s really hard to read sometimes. If I want to know something about how he is feeling I always have to ask bc he’s super hard to read & I’ve told him that I loved him about a year old & he told me that he does love me & care about me as a person but he wasn’t in love with me & I've never said it again. He also told me he wasn’t in love with his girlfriend either at that time but this past time we ended things I told him “ if you really don’t care about me like I do you, you need to tell me. Brutally honestly tell me, we will still be friends no matter what . It just messes with my head & I need to know” and he said yes I care about you & have feelings for you and then bam here we are again messing around.
