Well when discussing it with one of our mutual friends, I said I was surprised he said anything like that at all because he's very emotionally guarded and he said 'it must be tough that he won't open up to you directly'. So I kind of got the impression that it was quite a deep thing

Yes, most people did but he told me he didn't feel the same way but then has been saying this after that...
