What is the point of punishment? all it does is makes a person suffer and be misreable?

i am on punishment for a whole month, i am confined to my room every weekend until July, i am only allowed out for school , my crime i sneaked out while grounded and got drunk with some friends and throw dustbins around the police came and took me home to my parents, they went mad and said i must expect quite a severe punishment, i have been shut in my room all weekend and i have another month to serve, i have told my parents i won't do it again so why do i have to suffer being punished all it does is make me misreable?

my parents are having a barbecue party on Saturday, my cousins are coming and it sounds like a great day, my parents said because there will be alcohol at the party and plus i am on punishment, i will have to stay LOCKED in my room for safety reasons as well as a punishment , i think this is really cruel what do you think, please be honest?

You learn from your mistakes! Mistakes tend to have consequences we usually don't like and that make us suffer and miserable!! That's USUALLY how we know NOT to make those mistakes again!! Without the "punishment" and at least VERY temporary misery, you probably won't learn from your mistakes!! Did you ever get burned from putting your hand into a flame or get an electric shock? Didn't that suffering and misery teach you NOT to put your hand into a flame and to be careful when dealing with electricity? If so, lesson learned!! Likewise, if you do something bad and don't get punished for it, aren't you more likely to do it again since you can easily get away with it?
If you push your baby brother into a pool and nearly kill him and you're parents don't reprimand you for it in ANY way, you're likely to keep doing it, aren't you? The only thing you learned from it is, "baby brother makes funny splashing sound." But, if they spank you and yell at you, you quickly learn that it's NOT something you should ever do again!!

Hate to tell you but, sounds like you do! If anything of the sort happened to me, dad would've tore my head off!!! That HURTS!!! Got it stuck on good & proper, now!! Super Glue, good as new! The spankings and punishment I got was usually for things like, leaving the front door open, leaving the t. v. or lights on when I wasn't using them anymore. Most often, it was my youngest ex-sister that did all that shit but, I'M the one that got all the blame and punishment for it!!! She could do NO WRONG, in their eyes!! And it was apparently MY job to follow her around and clean up all her messes and do the shit that needed done that she never did... MOSTLY because my parental units never BOTHERED to teach HER to do this shit, like they did, me!!

I know how you feel!! In my case, I didn't even do anything!! All I did was help mom through her last few months while my greedy bitch ex-sisters robbed her blind!!! I got evicted from my own house and lost TONS of my valuables in the move and am now stuck in my aunt's house with no way to pay the bills, no room for the valuables I DID manage to get out and not even a friend to help or talk to, other than on the phone or online! The neighbors up here are assholes, I don't have easy access to the outside world, and I can't even get the garage door open to be able to cut the grass!! I have nowhere to get out an walk, I don't drive so, my edema is slowly trying to take my feet and legs away!! If I could at LEAST get my drums up here!!!

some such as being told off for touching something that could harm us.

then at your age breaking a rule of trust (to behave and do as expected) means your parents need to do something to make you think about what you did.

somethings if we learn to late in life, means instead of being grounded, we get a custodial sentence.

A minor punishment from parents, as a young adult is better than a major punishment by the courts as a fully fledged adult.

I'm sure they'd like you to meet and marry a mature, stable guy who will be a good husband and father, they want you to have fun in life but be safe about it... find a career you enjoy and have a good education and good job, a stable family of your own. At this young immature age you are probably just focused on fun and peer group acceptance. When you are older you'll realize peers are meaningless. I don't know or hang out with anyone I knew from school I resist peer pressure and do what I want and know is right and I couldn't care less if any peers agree or not.

You are too immature right now. Keeping you out of trouble until you wise up is good parenting. Being your "friend" and letting you do whatever you want at 16-17 is bad parenting. Your brain isn't fully developed yet. You aren't ready for full freedom and adult choice making.

If you don't agree with it and want to be a full blown adult... free to drink and stay out partying all night... you are free to move out, get your GED, get whatever job you can get with a GED and support yourself. Yes. It's meant to discourage you from repeat what you did to be punished. If the punishment doesn't work they will just make it worse next time, like removing your phone/internet. So you get ecen more bored.

my parents say they want me to learn from being punished last weekend while locked in my room i had to write 2 four page punishment essays one on THE DANGERS OF UNDERAGE DRINKING and another essay on UNACEPTABLE BEHAVOUR AND PUNISHMENT, this weekend not only will i be set fresh essays to write but my parents have got be leaflets on the dangers of drinking underage, part of my punishment will be to copy these out several times, plus schoolwork, i won't of course be allowed tv phone etc and i will only be allowed out of my room for a shower in the morning and bathroom breaks otherwise my bedroom door will remain LOCKED at all times, my parents said NO more sneaking out NO more drinking and NO more bad behavour this time i get punished properly.
1) do you think the essays are a good thing?
2) do you think my parents are right to make me spend 4 weekends locked in my room as a punishment? my parents say education is an important part of punishment saying they want me to learn from the punishment do you agree?

I think essays are a good thing. Making you write them hopefully you will learn something from writting them. I think that's a great way to get you to learn why what you did was wrong and learn from it. Spending 4 weeks locked in your room is a cake walk compared to doing a solid 4 weeks of physical labor you dont enjoy. If you're not allowed to use your phone or computer how are you posting on here?
