It's just a term used by Mexican guys. You either like it or u hate it. I hate it. Just like calling you a hottie or hey missy type of shit.

Some of their idioms and proverbs start with “mama”. Sometimes it’s an exclamation. So it is probably idiomatic and/or a habit. Or maybe you were mommying him so he replied like that.

It means "mom". But if he tells you "mamacita" (literally "little mommy") then the real meaning is "hottie".
