What does it mean when a guy pretends that he is going to kiss you?

I know this sounds a little confusing but, I have this guy friend that I've known for forever. One night he kept putting his hand on my cheek randomly and leaning in acting like he was going to kiss me, but then he'd just pull away and smile. Please someone help !!! I don't know what this means.

It's hard to say without knowing more about the situation... but... based on what you wrote here...

My guess is that your friend wants to kiss you.

He is choosing to approach this is a weird and super-immature way. He is framing his genuine desire to want to kiss you as a joke in order to reduce his own vulnerability. By 'pretending' to kiss you, he doesn't have to take the risk of being rejected (and all the implications of that for your friendship) by ACTUALLY trying to kiss you.

He is doing it for two reasons. The first, is to somewhat "guage your reaction". If you pushed him away and seemed freaked out or disgusted... then he is safe in claiming it was all a joke. If on the other hand, you didn't show any obvious signs that you'd reject a kiss from him... he feels more confident he won't be rejected if/when he actually kisses you.

The second reason is to "get you used" to thinking about him in a romantic/sexual way. He is trying to get you to (generally) open your mind to the idea of seeing him as something MORE than 'just a friend'. The idea is to get your mind to THINK about kissing him.

Honestly... this is not 'normal' guy behavior. It seems like a guy who lacks confidence when it comes to women (even if he seems to come off as confident). He doesn't know what he's doing. He is fumbling around trying to achieve this goal (of kissing you and/or taking your friendship to another level).

I can't really imagine any other motivation aside from what I outlined above. No guy who wasn't interested in his female friend would ever pretend to kiss her. It would be an insane thing for that guy to do to a girl he had no interest in. First of all... it's just weird. Second of all... it's just such an easy way to end up in a horrible sitation--if the female friend he was 'pretending' to kiss happened to have feelings for him. No guy who just sees a girl as a friend would ever do that.

Most guys who are interested in you wouldn't do what this guy is doing either. Nevertheless... I think I can see the "shy-little-boy" logic underpinning his odd behaviour.

So... if you like this friend... you should give him a kiss.

If you DON'T like this friend... then it's time to start dropping random "I see you like a brother" or "I could never go out with a guy I was close friends with" or whatever applies to your situation. You don't have to acknowledge that you know that he likes you... but you DO need to 'drop hints' (a lot of them) that you aren't interested in anything beyond a friendship with him.

Guys will lean in in hopes that you will take the hint and also lean in to kiss. If you don't they don't feel stupid for trying to kiss you if you pull away.
