Why a guy keeps checking my instagram stories every time I upload anything?

There is this guy ( both him and I are in our early 30s) whom I used to attend university with and he has been my instagram friend for the past couple of years. I noticed that every time I upload an instagram story he is the first one to see it. I approached him and messaged him casually with a hope that I understand what are his intentions. He was super friendly and the conversation was mutually comfortable. He was also noted to be sending lots of emojis as we were chatting. Since our conversation, he hadn’t contacted me but he started to react to my stories occasionally. I am bit confused and keen for anyone’s thoughts.
