Why would a guy tell you about a girl he likes if he clearly likes you?

I have a guy friend who I am very sure has feelings for me. Our relationship has gotten a lot closer over the last few months. I am 95% sure he has feelings for me but once he told me about another girl he liked and wanted to ask out. When I asked why he didn't he said he just liked how things were and he didn't want a girlfriend. He has only done this once and hasn't talked about her since. So why did he mention it at all?

Desperation or maybe he doesn't like you enough (I'm not sure, could be anything). Or he said he really doesn't want anyone and thus thinks liking enough (others) is okay.. whys your username that
