According to the multiverse theory, there are an infinite number of alternate worlds, each one different.

In this universe, you had a normal day. You woke up, drove to work, went through the day, and came back home. All normal.

In another universe, you woke up, got in your car, and had an accident on the way to work. You never made it there.

He's saying that you two aren't together in this universe, but in another universe, things are different. You met at a different time, when you were both single. In another universe, you're together.
