I’m a lm independent woman and this through me off when he said it. Why would he go out of his way to say it?

Because, as a general rule, that's how males show their love and worthiness to someone else. In fact it could be argued that it is hard coded in our DNA as there are loads of examples in nature of male animals doing just that. Wether its building a nest or dam, collecting food, or making displays of physical strength and skill it's how most warm blooded males prove their worth and "get the girl".

Because to him, you are family. Him paying the bills can be his way of showing his teady to provide for the kids to come, if you two dont already have them.
