Funny, I've done some version of almost all of these except the lighting the match on the face. I did learn a trick to light a match out of a matchbook using only one hand.

Steak - yes working in a restaurant, I have eaten steak barehanded in the back of the house. It made more sense than getting a plate, knife, fork and the whole job out since there would be nowhere to put it anyway. I was eating standing up.

Shaving - I shave with an electric razor now when clean shaven, but I'm growing a beard out right now, and I use a straight razor to clean it up around the edges and neckbeard area. It's just the best tool for the job, safety razors like the Mach 6 get clogged on one pass. I used to shave all the time with a straight razor, and it's still the best way to shave my genitals as well.

Injury - I haven't been seriously injured much, but when I got my radius and cervical spine fractured in a motorcycle accident, I just didn't want it to slow me down. So I kept riding my motorcycle with a cast on, as well as going rock climbing, hiking, and more or less living life as normal as possible around the encumbrance of a cast. I wasn't trying to be cool or tough, I just didn't want to miss out on life, and it really didn't seem like "that big a deal".

Whiskey - I realized around 13-14 when I first started drinking hard alcohol that I could easily drink shots (or larger swigs) "without making the icky face". I love that description, by the way :D Great pairing with the Clint E. pic, too! Anyway, it was like a parlor trick and I could get adults to give me hard alcohol because of it, so I was encouraged.

Home surgery - I've had a couple minor injuries that other people probably would have gone to a hospital for, but I opted to save my money (I've been uninsured most of my life to save money) and fix it at home. One example (which has actually happened to me twice) was when my toenail got smashed and began to swell up and turn purple. The first time I was in Thailand, and I used a sewing needle to lance the toe and relieve the pressure of blood building up. When it happened to me stateside, I used a cordless drill to drill through the toenail and relieve the pressure. Both instances worked out well and the new nail grew from underneath with no complications. I kept them both very clean.

Development - I hope to always be learning and growing. And yes, it's immature to try to be a show off tough cool person. A true "alpha" person is one who contributes to their community, serves others and looks for opportunities to support and nurture them.

I think if he tells everyone his injury is not a big deal it's a way of coping, which is brave of him to be or he is a stoic person. You must wonder though, if a man saying his injury isn't a big deal he might wrestle with a leopard one day.

The body produces it's own painkillers called endorphin and adrenaline. After the first moments of pure pain, the autonomic nervous system kicks in and brings it down to tolerable levels. Or you take a little nap and can try again when you wake up.
