Why do men ask women who they was talking to?

So I have this friend and we was talking about work and the gym then all of a sudden he said “ so who was that guy you was talking to in the parking lot the other day” so I asked him what guy he said “ the tall one, I saw y’all talking when I was on my break while sitting in my car and it looked like he was going to ask you for your number”. So I told him it’s just a friend that’s all and he said ohh okay. My question is why do men do this?

When he said the other day he really meant last night, cause we didn’t see each other until the next day

I agree with @Rabitzzz if he wasn't bothered by it or wasn't interested in ya that much he'd have brought it up the day of or not at all. To me it strikes me as more as entitled jealousy
