I tried to befriend a guy in my class but he runs away not sure if he's scared or not interested?

So there's this guy whom I would really love to be friends with but i always need to get him talk otherwise he wouldn't, I tried asking open ended question where he can share his opinions , trying to get to know more about his interests but he's not helping, I don't know what's the problem and i have never seen a person playing hard for becoming friends, it's not even like he isn't comfortable around girls he has female friends but he's really reticent around me does he hate me Or am I intimidating him or does he like me romantically?
Can u share your insights and help me out
