He said that he didn't feel the same way but he's been opening up to his friends about how he feels and said that he does care about me. I've had some of his friends asking me if I would go back to someone who rejected me and who should make the first move in that situation. His friend also told me that our situation is different to his situation which is basically he likes a girl and she doesn't like him back. He told me, 'it must be difficult that he won't open up to you directly' and said 'it's not that he doesn't lov-' and then stopped himself and changed the word. What does this mean?

Okay, once again, who is 'he'?
the guy who rejected me
Okay, that's why I ask this question. That changes everything. First of all, his friend probably doesn't really know shit, he is just sticking up for his buddy. What was the context of the conversation when he said that? What was said right before he said that? Second, he REJECTED you. Do you think he somehow didn't mean it or something? Just take the L and move on.
We were talking about how he admitted he cares about me and his friend said it must be tough that he won't open up to me directly. And I did, I left the situation alone and he dragged it on.
His friend dragged it on?
The guy who rejected me. He wouldn't leave it go and now I'm being told all of this.
What do you mean by he wouldn't let it go?
Acting inconsistently - being annoyed when I didn't talk to him as normal, distant when I did, getting angry at me for no reason and giving mixed signals about his feelings about stuff that had happened between us before and then instantly regretting it and being nice again... Also looking me up on social media (even though we weren't friends) and blocking me after I made my account public because it was 'too difficult to see my posts'.
Good lord, quit torturing yourself and move on. A guy that really wants you does not act like that.
