New to university and getting complimented a lot? Please read the description?

So I am new to university and I am an year late, didn't socialise much and had very limited friends. Now in the hostel of them university I'm in, I am complimented a lot by my friends, acquaintances and sometimes even strangers. Some even assumed that I am a model lol. I'm mostly complimented by guys very openly and repetitively but not by girls. I keep it to myself mostly and haven't been in a habit to talk with girls always. Although I have noticed that girls only stare at me from a distance and sometimes they look away or they keep staring.
Although I'm not too confident but I have been told that I come off as confident and bold.
If girls here can think of the situation, can you please tell what would you think of such a guy? Would you be hesitant to talk, if so, please elaborate why?
