My (18f) friend (18f) was looking at a photo for my new ID and said I was cute. There was a guy (18m) with us and she asked him 'doesn't she look cute' and he said nothing and she asked him again and he still said nothing and looked uncomfortable and avoiding the question. I changed the subject after that because it was awkward.

He did the same thing when I was talking about birthdays with him and naturally asked his birthday was because birthdays interest me and he looked away again so I just talked about something else.

He never struck me as shy since he always initiated conversations/

That doesn’t mean anything. I could strike up a platonic conversation with a very attractive woman no problem, but as soon as it crossed into something else be a complete moron stumbling over my words. This sounds like a classic case of being put on the spot.
