Why would a older gay man try to befriend me?

Ok so i was eating lunch in public seating eating area an. This guy sat next to me (it was crowded so i dont think he was chasing me i just think i happened to be closest to him so his outgoing self started befriending me.).

And now we have beeb texting just basic small talk but now dont call me homophobic but i honestly can't get past in my mind the fact he's a guy

And im a girl

And i dont know how to relate to men especially older men on a level that isn't like daddy or romantic you know?

So he wants to hang out casually. I dont know if he wants me... You know or what. I am honestly confused by the whole gay thing. I know it used to be popular for girls to have a gay best friend.

Im just confused.

I was ok talking to him at first in person. He seems nice. Listens. Not pushy. But via text im uncomfortable cause he's like trying to hang out with me soon and I don't know if we have muxh in common to even talk about? Im not into gay culture or anything. Im truly confused lol. How should i act? I am open to making friends but he just seems to want to set up a place and time to hang out with me with no purpose to utm
