A guy from University sliding into dms?

I don't know this person in real life. He apparently knows me. He's from a nearby department which I pass by everyday multiple times to get to my classes. I found this by asking a mutual about his identity. He's the mutual's school acquaintance. When I asked the guy who he is, he said I'm no one - let's text if you want. I blocked him, but why does this happen?

I've gotten different dms like do you know me, have you seen me. Like no wtf. Why do these dudes creep on girls who they've never spoken to irl and then dm them😑

Yah, that was the best action to take given the fact that he was even being completely anon and creepy about his id. Texting should have been his courage booster to present himself as he should have been able to irl and be more comfortable expressing himself, but no he blew it lol. And I'm not saying he def had a chance w you bcus, I don't know and obviously an unknown number/person could always spell danger but perhaps revealing his identity, wouldn't have made him appear so creepy or potentially dangerous
