Can I guy be mistaking that a girl likes him?

and if its not his type what would he do to show it if the girl is at the same place if yes how? (he is not a totally stranger but i never talked to him)

would he try to look like he is into someone else so you can "back off"? because i one time did as a girl making it look like i have somebody and telling his sister like yeah maybe i have one in a shy way so her brother would be like oh she has a boyfriend let me find another girl... it did help tho.. in our culture it's not common to be direct and say this is my boyfriend, we are dating etc... or are boys not like that?

because it could be that i gave somebody wrong messages, making it look like im there for him, i have a crush on him etc... making i contact, smiling a lot
