This guy I know works at a store that I go to. I've known him for a while and we've even slept together once. A couple of days ago was his birthday. I walked up to him and said "you're working on your birthday? And he said yep and then I said why? And said happy birthday. He said thanks and then he ran his fingers through his hair. He told me he was leaving after he got off from work and that he was going out of town. I said nice and then I said see you later. And I think he said see you later.

People have their life hardships and sometimes it’s better not to remind them of their hardships. I’d ask him, “what are you going to do after work to celebrate your birthday?” and other similar positive questions or conversations.

Yeah, asking him that may have soured the interaction a little. It’s a question you don’t really need to ask anyway. The answer is likely because his boss isn’t letting him have the day off or he needs the money. Both aren’t very good things to be reminded about.

But then when girls ask the same thing about a guy, everybody says "yeah, he's totally in to you"

They're both being "paid" to "be nice", so, why is there a diff?

They are being paid to be nice and to help the customer. But they don't have to engage in anything personal. I told him happy birthday and he told me he was going out of town for his birthday. That doesn't have anything to do with his job.
