My male coworker constantly texts me to make sure I’m getting my work done. He’s not my boss. Why does he care so much?

My manager told me not to use him as a role model or ask any questions to him.

Yeah seriously!!! He texts me and then I get distracted with that and can’t actually do my work then. He’s so controlling. He leaves this job in 2 weeks. My boss isn’t unhappy with me so no need to check in. Why does he always ask me if I’m “all good?” and stuff?
