What does he actually want?

I’ve been talking to this guy for a few months recently he had told me he just wanted to be friends but he kept acting like he was still interested, calling me all day and night, asking me to hang out, yes we were also hooking up, so I thought it was appropriate to ask again what he wanted “friends with benefits?” And he said he didn’t know what he wanted maybe just friends, so obviously I got upset because I feel like he was leading me on and ended it and he ends up txting me again to go over and spend the night because his family was having a bbq the next day, and he said he wanted to be friends again…. I mean we’ve only known each other for a few months why is he pushing this friendship thing so hard? Or what does he really want? He already denied the friends with benefits option so I’m confused
