A crush is usually an infatuation of one person over another one.

This is a one-way street and in most cases, the infatuated one (or the crushed one) has no idea that someone has a crush on him/her.

By saying "thanks", he merely expressed his appreciation that someone wished him a happy birthday and that ends there. I am sure that if the crush was reciprocated, he would have said more than just a plain "thanks".

The fact that you barely talk at all at the university is just the confirmation of that fact. He does not treat you any different from all the other students.
