Was this man just another member of the gym or was he a staff of that gym?

If he is just another client, just like you, then it is not his duty to show other clients how to do an exercise. The reason is that if he does a mistake and you get hurt, he may be faced with legal action.

Why don't you ask a member of the staff that is trained to teach exercises to show you how to do it. That way, not only do you make sure that you are taught how to do this exercise correctly but you can always ask him/her to correct it should you do it wrong.

It is only to your advantage to ask the trained staff over a member of the gym that is not qualified to give you professional advice.
