I asked a guy at the gym a question but he responded so weirdly?

I have recently tried to get into the habit of asking if I need to use areas with someone closer so today I asked this guy to use the wall next to where he was. It wasn’t like blocking him or anything it was just a common courtesy.

Anyway I was trying to ask him and when he finally noticed he literally looked like he saw a ghost when he looked at me. He knew I was behind him but I don’t know why I startled him speaking to him? Anyway I just asked to use the wall behind him, he then proceeded to say yeah you can use it, but then he kept going on about if I needed the bench he was on I said no and he said it again. It was really weird. Usually if people ask me to use an area I just say yeah and adjust a little but he was really over the top. Then during the workout he just kept staring at me..

I think he has noticed you before, and was caught off guard when you approached him from behind. Or maybe he felt guilty for not noticing someone there, so he was just overcompensating by being extra friendly and accommodating.

This sounds like overthinking. Usually people are hyperfocused on themselves at the gym and outside interactions can catch people off guard especially if they are on pre work out and such.

@asker you took him being caught off guard personally, that’s indeed overthinking especially when it gets to a point of openly asking a question
