What does it mean if a guy friend pays attention to the small details?

I'll post a story the day before and then he'll randomly bring up small details about it. He won't reply the day I post it but he'll bring up the conversation the next day. He's the one always initiating the conversations too.

If he is a really close friend then it might just be that he is attentive to detail, and that's kind of it.

If he isn't that close of a friend then it could mean that he wants to get closer.

He said something that upset me a few minutes ago. So, I told him to not talk to me anymore and to stop sending me messages. He replied with two long paragraphs explaining himself. Don't know how to take that. I just know that I'm not talking to him anymore.

My bull calf died and he cracked a joke about sick leave. His excuse was that he didn't want to see me sad.

it may have been an insensitive joke, but his intention was good, i wouldn’t hold it against him, maybe just ask him to not say stuff like that anymore.
