The guy I like sent me a friend request on Facebook and later deleted it. What could be the reason?

I saw the notification late at night that he had sent me a request. I was surprised because we've never spoken. I know him from the former church I used to attend frequently. When walking past each other, he might say hi or I would say hi, and other times he doesn't and I don't.

I followed him on Instagram about three years ago, but he never followed me back. So I just decided to unfollow him. He follows my brother on Instagram and is friends with my mom on Facebook. Most of his friends at the church have added me, so we have mutual friends. I'm just thinking why does it seem that he's conflicted with just adding me? I'm wondering if it could be that he accidentally added me or if he actually did and changed his mind.
