Me and my friend had to leave the mall early and we said our goodbyes, I went in for a hug (I was expecting chest to chest) - he hugged me sideways. He's has a huge crush on me since the 2nd grade, what does this sideway hug mean?

Either that he has a boner, wanted to make sure you were ok with hugging him, or he was afraid of getting even more attached to you which hugging does.

Not true. I've started growing feelings for him (I realized that 2 months after this happened). I like spending time with him and we're like best friends, so i'm definitely not using him as "my stand-in boyfriend".
