What does it mean when a guy says he needs time and doesn’t know if he wants to continue being in the talking stage or just be friends?

He doesn't know if he wants to continue talking? People talk to get to know one another better. If he doesn't even know if he wants that, he's not giving you much at all.

Don't wait around for someone like this. He doesn't have to know if he's interested in you romantically, right away, but if he doesn't even know if he wants to chat, then you're not being appreciated. If he's around your age, he's probably got the attention span of a gnat, and he's 'keeping his options open' (aka looking for easy sex, not relationships he has to put any work into.)

There is no "talking stage." He's just making that up. He's not that interested, but he's trying to soften the blow. Guys know when they're attracted.

I mean it's up to you, and what you want, and whether you truly believe he is worth the patience and time. But I think it's a classic example of a guy pushing a girl away, but convoluting what he's really thinking, so that she doesn't get mad; and he can still chat once in a while, if he's bored or doesn't have other better options at the time.

I'm sure you've a lovely girl. I'm not saying you're not worth it. But many people wonder why girls put up with guys like this. Is he good looking? Have you had a crush on him for a while? If he doesn't even want to put in the time to get to know you, you need to ask yourself why you would invest more time into him.

Attraction is simple. When guys hesitate, pull back, don't reciprocate in kind, they're not motivated. And if they're not motivated, they won't be good to you.
