Different people get loved in different ways, I think they call them love languages. Some people need words of affection, or physical acts, or gifts, etc. So if you can find out how your SO feels loved, it'll be easier to show him that you do. One relatively famous story on the internet is about how the guy came from a family that never verbalized love, so he never said I love you. Instead he talked to his wife and they agreed that to say I love you, he would squeeze her hand three times. And then suddenly he was doing it every day multiple times a day, so he was always full of that love he just couldn't show it or she couldn't understand him trying to show it

I wouldn't take that too seriously if he was drunk, maybe he just wanted sex by telling you to love him.
