I find it really weird that you understand this at your age, but I'll help. First, NO guy ever wants to be your friend. He may end up there, but make no mistake, he would bang you in a heartbeat. Second, if he starts being Merv the Perv after you and your boyfriend breakup then he CLEARLY wants to have sex with you. He might be waiting for you to do something to indicate that you're on board. Don't be subtle. Next time if you want to just ask him if he wants to have sex. Lots of guys are terrified of going too far and doing something a woman didn't want because they misread what they thought was a signal.
