So I am 25. Now lets assume I have a job. An apartment. A degree with future prospects. At 25 this is pretty good, I am doing well and possibly ahead of the curve and can expect a positive reaction.
At 30, this is all still positive but probably not going to lead to a lot of compliments. Its gone from doing well to having things in order.
At 20, this would mean I am way ahead of almost everyone. If the degree is at least a bachelors and possibly more I'd range from gifted to outright genius.
At 40 people might instead wonder why I don't have more.
When we interact, the gap between 20, 25 and 30 are neglible. How I am received, as the same person (!), has changed tremendously though. And so whether it is insecurity, fitting in, or heck maybe just not wanting to admit I am that guy who was in the paper a few years ago for starting my doctorate at 14, it can be understandable.
Naturally a lie is a lie and I am not defending it. At the very least it has come to light and you can understand and react to it. I would suggest you ask the guy in question for his reason.00 Reply

+1 yFor a lot of reasons. He might want to date younger girls; so, he'll pretend to be a few years younger. He may want to date older; so, same thing (but opposite). They may also lie about their age to avoid conversations involving the years they're leaving out. What's the scenario you're talking about?

Asker+1 yThe scenario is that we just met each other he asked my age I told him. He realized I was older and told me he turned the same age in a few days but one of his friends told me that wasn’t his real birthday.

A guy won't want to seem below a girl that he's interested in; so, that's probably why he's lying.
What Guys Said
Not being comfortable with whatever age he is? Being different from the mean in terms of behavioural patterns, either far more mature at a young age or retaining far more youthfulness than most during middle age?
Lots of potential reasons, it's almost always situational.

+1 yWell depending on who he's talking to, to either trick her to thinking that it's ok to be with him, to pretend to be more around her age, to pretend to be more mature than he is... There's a whole world of possibilities, none which justify it or don't make him shitty. Still some are worse than others
00 ReplyWhy would a girl? I've never understood that. And I'm not talking about underage girls who lie about age in order to get access to an adult place, I'm talking about adult women who lie about their age. So, if you can answer my question, MAYBE that will give an answer to yours as well - who knows... :)

Anonymous(30-35)+1 yI go to school with a bunch of people 5 years younger. I just say I’m the same age. Why? Because people are gossipy. They need to know every little detail and judge you. What difference does age make in a school or job setting? What makes a difference is the person.
00 Reply801 opinions shared on Guy's Behavior topic. What? Since when did this happen. I know women lie about their age constantly as a guy I figured it would be better to be older

@Jamie05rhs This appears to be a systemic problem. @sage2021 was complaining about this same problem yesterday.

"Why would a guy lie about his age?"
1. He enjoys lying.
2. He is too stupid to know his true age.
3. Lying is just a habit.
4. Lying requires constant practice.
5. He is trying to hide his identity.
6. He believes that being younger or older will increase his rate of success with his intended victims.
7. He simply wants to see how gullible you are.
If you caught him in a lie to you, does it really matter WHY he lied? - +1 y
