Why would an older guy lie about being younger?

For context: I’m 18 and he told me he was 25. We’ve been talking for almost a year but I was curious if he was keeping things from me. I found out that he was actually 34. I haven’t told him that I know

He really likes you but is afraid you will freak out if you find out how old you are. I met a girl one night who was older than me. She was 28 and said she was 25 because she was afraid I would think she was too old. I was 22 and I told her I was 24 because I did not want her to think I was a little kid.

If you know when his next birthday is wish him a happy 35th birthday when it is close.

He’s trying to manipulate you, he knows it’s wrong for a 34 yo to be chatting up an 18 yo so he tried to down play it by lowering his age. Either way, major red flag. Run.

Well... one of a few reasons

1. He knows you will stop talking to him. So he keeps it up.

2. It was a joke or mistake he forgot about.

3. He's manipulating you for some reason. Sex being the most probable.

Yeah I can see those being plausible, but do you think for number 3 that can also involve pregnancy? He doesn’t mention it option but the first he said “I want to trap you and get you pregnant so you would have a reason to come back” which I thought maybe he was joking until last night he randomly mentioned the idea of me having kids with him

For the same reason women lie about their weight. Because women are very judgmental typically. Women typically do not want to date a guy over 10 years older than her. Well if that's you then he knew you wouldn't even give him a chance. So he probably figured he give it a little time wait till you liked him a bit, then told you his real age. Hoping by then you'd like him enough that it wasn't a deal breaker for you anymore.
