It is apparent throughout a range of questions that many US males are continually trying to show how manly they are. This is often through denigrating the freedom of others to live as they wish and also, frequently using homophobic and racist hate speech. This is in contrast to US females who are generally very open minded and more likely to live and let live.

What causes this extreme cultural gap?

History + experience + being influenced by people surrounding each other. A simple example is, the US culture includes the hand on heart business during the national anthem, it's part of the culture. Look at American football and baseball, both part of the culture as are the cheerleaders. All influenced by others.

1. There isn't a "gun culture" here. Most people in the United States don't even own a single firearm, nor know how to operate one, nor do they know what is or isn't an automatic weapon, or where to even get weapons aside from a bb gun or hunting rifle, which are not commonly purchased unless you live in the rural wilderness filled areas (Most people in the US live in dense cities or suburbs, a few might own a pistol, but its rare).

The only time guns are talked about by most people in the US, is in fictional media references like star wars/marvel/dc/etc, or from legal system changes such as idiots trying to abolish the second amendment or make gun laws stricter, despite the fact that people who are willing to commit murders are also going to have no issue breaking any law to acquire a gun, whereas a law abiding citizen would be left disarmed by such law changes, thus increasing the death count from gun based crimes, as no one is left to shoot the criminal back.

So what you refer to as "gun culture" is just the handful of people who aren't idiots, being louder than the general public.

2. It's not national pride, it's what used to be common sense. You only really see US national pride in military types, news station owners (most news stations here are owned by the same company so thats a short list), activists, or politicians.

Almost everyone else here thinks the gov is corrupt (minus a few people running schools or sports stadiums), no different than a mob/gang/mafia, just like all governments of the world are, or they think that some things about the gov are good, and others bad. But gov and politics are something the majority rarely even thinks about in general.

No, thats not what culture is. Most people ignore history.

People like what they like, and hate what they hate, because of their unique/individual genetic makeup. They get exposed to something, and their own dna predetermines whether or not they will like it.

Culture happens when many individuals who have genetic outcomes of liking x things, get together to share the experiences of those things. So its social herding based on already having commonalities, not the result of influence from the gov, media, parents, or schools. Traditions are rare here, and short lived unless they offer rewards, like presents, pretty lights, or tastey food at Christmas, which even I enjoyed despite being an atheist.

Another example, you mention sports, I hate sports, its fucking boring. You know who likes sports? People who naturally hate thinking, and suck at science and art as a result, typically like sports. it's not nurture, its nature.

Even in media, people pick which media already has what they like/already agrees with them, they aren't influenced by media, instead the reverse is true, the public influences what media gets aired or played or sold, ie demand creates the supply. and many niches exist that blot out any sense of "mainstream"

The US does have a gun culture with 44% of households owning at least one gun: the UK 2%. In the UK assault style weapons and handguns are banned in most circumstances. In UK history, 5 mass shootings, in the US, EVERY YEAR an average of more than one mass shooting a day.
If your assertation about law abiding citizens needing guns for protection thus reducing death by firearm is not born out by statistics. US (very little gun control) 3.96 deaths by firearm per 100,000: UK (strict gun control) 0.4 deaths by firearm per 100,000. Our culture does not tolerate indiscriminate gun ownership, US culture does.

In every mass shooting that occured in recent years in the united states, all or most of the victims were unarmed, and thats why many people died instead of 1 or a few. You can cite "statistics" written on paper ir a website all day, but they do not counter the reality of cause and effect, or facts in general.

Also, in almost every single shooting case, the guns were obtained illegally, and many cities its illegal to conceal carry, so even legally owned guns can't be hidden there, and yet they are, and mass shootings still happen there, because laws do not actually stop criminals.

You can't compare UK to US because 1. you don't live here, so your "facts" are bullshit, and 2. the economic situation is different, the people are different, the laws are different, and its hardships that create crime, not a lack of laws.

Statistically, Europeans are more internationally travelled than their US counterparts. for example, about 30% of US citizens hold a passport, the UK about 75%.
People on the outside looking in often have a more balanced and unbiased perspective. There's no harm in recognising our weaknesses, that way they can become strengths.

"More traveled" is essentially irrelevant with regards to the accuracy of your perception of the US when that typically means the UKer has traveled to Mallorca/Menorca, France, the Algarve and other places in Europe that are quite different from the US., or places in other parts of the world that are even more different culturally.

by the way, I have lived the majority of my adult life in Europe and have European relatives, including my mother, so I've seen this claim erroneously made time and again by Europeans. What you're really doing is expecting the US to fit your cultural values and leaving out the cultural context of US society.

According to a poster on the walls of the US consulates in Germany, it's 40% of US citizens. But that's affected by geography- we have a continent-sized country.
