Guys, when you tell a girl that you like her, do you really mean it?

Cause a guy told me that he likes me but due to some reasons, he said it's hard for us to be together. I'm just trying to figure out whether he lied to me when he did actually say that he likes me cause if a guy genuinely likes you, he will climb mountains right?
