That's pretty normal behavior between men, although you can bet that the friend and your trainer know that you have a crush.

Women are sooooo painfully obvious when they have a crush. You all have that same adorable “deer in the headlights” look when we talk to you and when you randomly start avoiding us yet laughing at all our jokes; we basically know for sure.

Guys definitely greet that way. Guys rarely hint anything as a rule of thumb. If the guy knew him then he knew he was a trainer, and probably figured you were a client...
