Can Mexicans/Latinos in general laugh at racist jokes?

My boyfriend (who is mexican) and I were watching scary movie 5 and I didn’t remember what the movie had except that I heard it was really funny. We found ourselves hearing a lot of racist jokes specially black jokes and he popped a laugh during some of them but admitted he felt bad for doing so. There were also latino racist jokes involving the “overly religious mexican house keeper” and he laughed at that too. Was it bad of him to do this or am I being too uptight?

Anyone with a sense of humor can laugh at stereotype jokes.


The funnies racist joke I ever heard was told to me by a member of that race.


He was so confused why my friends and I were desperately trying not to laugh.


I told him it was racist, he didn’t know what that meant…so I explained it.


He laughed and said “Do you think I hate myself? Do you think laughing with me would make me think you hate me? Not laughing at my joke almost made me think you hate me, but now I see you’re just afraid other white people will hate you for laughing.”

I don't see why not! Back in the late `70's there was a slew of racial joke books going around. No race was sacred! It started out with Polish jokes, then they did Irish, black, white, Italian, Mexican, religious, not so religious, dirty, not so dirty, Russian, Jewish, Catholic, the whole ball of wax!! Nearly everybody that heard those jokes laughed at them, even if they were the target of the jokes! Today, people are so incredibly fucking thin-skinned, books like that would be banned!!

Something I noticed about them, because I had the entire collection of those books and read every one of them, is that quite a few of the jokes were used over and over in the various editions! Jokes originally intended for the Polish joke books would get switched to Irish, Jewish, Italian, what have you! So, quite a few of them were not ethno-centric!! They could be about ANY race!!

Mexicans in Mexico yes... we do laugh at ANYTHING and EVERYTHING... and we do that without much worry as long as it is a joke, and because it is just a joke

there is no much pretending down there... if something is funny and it is intended to be funny then you just laugh at it

whether is race, social class, gender, status, anything... whatever

nothing and nobody is safe really...

now, Mexicans and Latinos in the USA... that might go different, because up here in the USA there's a lot of pretending and hypocrisy as well... and not mention all those ~you know which groups of people~ that like to get offended for everyone else when those of the group are not even offended... lmao

Mexican/Latinos always do "racists" jokes in their comedies. It's the Anglo people that get mad at racist jokes even when it's not targeted at their race.

As a non U. S citizen, I have always found it disappointing the way that citizens of the U. S have empowered words/concepts, by elevating them to a taboo status. The culture which I am from (UK, AU, NZ) strips words/concepts of their power by "Owning" them. Reducing them to a joke by highlighting their idiocy through humour, we deprive them of power. In much the same way as bleeping out a swear word serves only to show ones weakness before it.

Racism is to believe in the superiority of one race over another.

If that is what is in your boyfriend's heart when he laughs, then he is being racist (His actions are racist as opposed to him being racist).

If not, then not.
