Guys, He said he wants me in his life but wants space?

It's my ex and we've been through a lot. he's been in a place where his emotions are all over and he still asks to see if I've been talking to anyone new. He says he misses me and wants me still in his life.

it's just he keeps switching. He said he's in a bad place and I talked to him this morning, he was snappy and apologized, cried on the phone when I told him I'd stop reaching out and he could instead if he wanted to hangout or talk. I told him to enjoy his life. He said he was depressed. His constant change is starting to affect me though.

Im over it now. His back and forth. Sometimes it feels like he's really going through something emotionally other times I feel like it's not. I just wanted to get an idea from a guys perspective of how he might feel without actually talking to him ( for obvious reasons)
