If I text my boyfriend "what's up?" And he says "thinking." Does that mean he's upset?

My boyfriend and I were texting and he was giving short vague responses which is how he always texts anyways but I couldn't keep the conversation rolling so I said, "sooo whatcha up to?" And he said "thinking" so I asked, "what are you thinking about?" And his response was "just life" 🙃🙃 is he upset? If so why isn't he telling me straight up that he's upset. If he's not upset though, why is he sending me these vague texts? We've been dating for 4 years and he does this a lot but I've never been able to figure out why.

Just found out he was upset. So would y'all consider this type of response to be reasonable or hella passive aggressive? I hate having to pry answers out of him

He's not telling you that he's upset because he isn't upset. He's telling you that he's thinking about life because his mind is processing thoughts about his life situation.

Many times, guys say things like that and mean exactly what they said.

Well there are times when some people prefer to stay silent and needs some space for some thinking. Maybe he's in that state. But he isn't sad. Maybe you should give him some space. He will come around

I've tried to in the past but he gets angry when I try to give him space. He views it as me not caring enough to stay and talk to him, but then if I stay, he doesn't give me anything to work with so I feel like I'm talking to a brick wall that will explode if I stop talking to it...

You should talk to him about this. You need to tell him that you cannot help him with such texts. He has to be more open about it. It looks like he builds a wall whenever you try to get to know about his feelings
