Getting sober takes a toll on the psyche. The brain has to remember how to produce the chemicals that the drugs were producing for it. Then it has to get used to doing it again.
Crowds might be a trigger for his cravings (albeit because of anxiety or a memory or any number of reasons). He's also probably aware that crowds could make running into people he used to get high with a high probability and when you're sober, the MOST proactive way to prevent a relapse is to stay away from the ones you used to run with. .. they don't care if you stay sober, they just care about the you who got high. They're likely to offer the drug and it's too soon for him to be strong enough to say no rush ght now.
Be patient, don't push and support his sobriety. He will open up about things over time so long as you're not constantly asking if you're the problem. Guys are pretty true to themselves and what they can handle so of he finds you annoying, trust and believe you will know.
