That's one possibility, but for many men, they are being completely truthful.

Guys feel tremendous pressure to have everything that a girl is going to expect from him, but most guys need years to build all that, and most girls today want it all, right now. When guys know they won't be able to keep a girl happy - won't be able to meet her expectations, whether it's not having enough time or money or whatever, then they will avoid getting involved in the first place. It hurts less to pass up a chance then to lose a girl you've developed feelings for because of things you can't control.

Guys today are only too well aware that they will be compared to guys on Instagram, and most guys can't hope to compete with that. So, until they feel they have enough to stand SOME chance of being able to keep a girl, they will often just not engage.

“I'm not ready” is a guy's way of saying one of two things: (1) “We're moving at different paces, and I need you to allow me to move at my own pace,” or (2) “I'm just not that into you, but I don't want to hurt your feelings.”

Not necessarily. Like what “Being_a_good_Indian” said, sometimes they really aren’t mentally or emotionally ready just yet and he needs more time (by taking it slow with you) to really prepare himself. Other times, he could really just be toying with you.

With my current boyfriend, left me “hanging” for almost a year. He kept saying that he wasn’t ready, it was all bcs he really was doing a lot of “cleaning up” internally, getting rid of any past hurts and properly moving on from his previous relationship.
