My ex was 'hurting himself'. He used to embarrasse me in public. He cheated on me. He said he used to set 'traps' when I would go through his phone because I was so insecure. I gained loads of weight and died my hair red because I thought that what he liked. He laughed at me and called me and idiot.

I wish it ended there but it didn't this lasted well into a year and a half of our relationship. We broke up not long after my 20th birthday. He didn't get me anything for all the time we had been together.

According to my first and last girlfriend (which was hilarious, like watching kung fu instead of doing) I was a "manipulator." But is that not the way of intimacy? One may buy gifts for another because one loves, and wishes to keep said lover. All humans seek duality, and will strive (manipulate) to attract a companion. Some will tell jokes, poems, songs, or have natural good looks; this is all manipulation. Natural or not. You got any idea of just how powerful a complement is? Is flirting not manipulation? Bonding is mutual manipulation.

anyway, when I seek out a partner, I will not change for her, but be me, so as to avoid conscious manipulation.

but it depends on a lot more contemplation, as is, I withhold many methods of manipulation, which I don't plan to exercise.
