Why does my friend rub my back when he hugs me?

So, I have this friend who I used to be "talking" to but now we are just friends and every time he hugs me goodbye, he rubs my back. I feel like this is weird because when we were "talking" he would just hug me and not rub my back.

Why is he rubbing my back?

Like in a “I am fond of you” rub or a “let's have sex” rub on the back?

I am not sure this is the first time any guy has rubbed my back. I'm not sure if this helps but just the other day before he pulled me into a hug, he smiled made eye contact and rubbed my back then while were hugging he was still rubbing my back.
