Guy's Behavior

What did he mean when he said this?

So I had been going through something and told my guy friend that we couldn't be friends anymore but i couldn't tell him the reason why. Really the reason being that I like him so much but we are just friends and I am too scared to tell him the way I feel. I couldn't take it being just his friend and nothing more. So I just told him that we couldn't be friends anymore and that I was sorry. He told me quote "Well just take some time to think about it and pray, and if after that you feel the same well i can accept it." I just said ok. Then after a week of thinking I realized I just can't lose a friend like him. He is just so special to me. So I told him I was sorry and how grateful I am for him in my life and just sappy things. I told him that I still couldn't tell him the reason why I had said we couldn't be friends and he said that he is sure I had my reasons and that I shouldn't worry. But then he said "But I'm also sure whatever happens, things are gonna change." I asked him what things he meant, and he said "Just our friendship in general." And I had asked "Like that we won't be friends in the future? That kind of change?" And then he said "Just ignore me haha. It was more like a question than a statement." That is the part where I am confused. Because if he meant it as a question than a statement, he would not of answered my question earlier when I had asked what kind of things he meant and he specifically said our friendship.
