What do you think about starting a relationship with a guy who has deep ties with his ex in terms of common friends, family members, etc?

The guy I started to see broke up with his girlfriend 2-3 times in the last couple of years but they came back together all the time. (I know them from a friend) The reason they come back according to me is commonly very close friends. His ex hangs out all the time with his female cousin, or his sister is a very close friend of hers.

Now, they again broke up and we started to meet with the guy. However, I have doubts about the relationship because of his past. We all have people in our past, but it looks like they have been married for 30 years. And I don’t know whether talking to him changes anything since he cannot intervene in the relationship of his friends, or sister with his ex.
