Is it a wise idea to remain friends with ex boyfriends or should contact be cut off- especially if in a new relationship?

A lot of people do remain friends with their exes but if someone decides to cut ties or not remain friends or even have contact with an ex, is it because there are still lingering feelings? Or is it because they wanted to move on?

ps - I personally cut contact with my ex because it wouldn’t be fair to my current partner who’s serious about me and secondly things didn’t go so well

You are right. If you are a new relationship, why would you expect your new partner to understand and tolerate you staying in touch with the guy who you were having sex with three months ago?

Hmmm, I think is better to maintain distance with an ex. I believed there was a chance to be friend with an ex, but it opens the door to several questioning and conflicts. As acquainntance, would be the more I would be willing to go.

I am of the camp of cutting things off completely, like ripping off the band aid instead of cutting the dogs tail off a little bit at a time so it does not hurt as much.
