Is this guy interested in me and what should I do?

He sits across from me in class and today I caught him looking at me at least 10 different times in the span of one lecture, but every time I turn back to him he looks away. I usually stare back at people who stare at me until they feel awkward but he didn't break eye contact. He only looked away when I smiled at him, I don't know if that's progress or I just made it weird. I've caught him looking at me a few other times but not like this. I like him but don't know how to approach, I don't know him that well even though we have mutual friends & have hung out in a group setting before. I feel like I'm just imagining it lol, any advice is welcome.

I made an attempt. We were doing a group project in pairs and when it was my turn to work with him I tried talking to him (just small talk about what we were working on) and he legitimately did not say anything back... I don't know what to think of that. After that we switched to work in different pairs but I felt kinda embarrassed even though I don't think I said anything wrong. Maybe I overestimated his behavior and he's not that into me lol.
