... not everyone speaks wholly clearly and exactly and precisely. So, him saying "I missed talking to you" is very likely the same thing as "I miss you".
Embrace this and build your relationship with him.
Just take the win and stop overthinking. People aren't always going to say things exactly how you want them worded.
