Guys, if you found out that a guy had assaulted your girlfriend years ago what would you do about it? Would you reach out to him?

I don't see what could be gained by reaching out. What would I even say? Best case scenario, he apologizes and says he's happy she found someone who treats her well. Worst case, it just enrages him, and he seeks out my girlfriend to beat or kill her (and me, most likely).

What I would do depends on whether or not this guy is still a threat. How long ago was this? Where does he live now? Is he sorry for what he did, or is he angry that she left him? Is he actively stalking her, or has he shaved his head and become a monk in some other country as penance?

To my girlfriend: express compassion, offer support, be sensitive to her needs, and avoid potential triggers until I'm more familiar with how this has affected her (no wife-beating jokes) while also acknowledging that she probably does not want me to feel like I'm walking on eggshells.
